Ivermectin acts on the parasites by effecting Gama Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) mediated signals between nerves and muscles. Flukes and tapeworms (Platyhelminths) are known not to use GABA as a neurotransmitter. Mammalian GABA energic neurons occur in the central nervous system and ivermectin does not penetrate the mammalian blood-brain barrier and hence it has very low toxicity.
